Borsan CEO Arbek Akay: “Our transition to 100% renewable energy will be completed by the end of 2024.” Ranked among Türkiye’s largest 500 industrial companies, Borsan continues to grow with value-added exports to over 80 countries. Embracing integrated management in its business and sustainability strategies, Borsan is committed to sustainability at the heart of its operations. With an investment of 300 million TL, the company plans to complete its transition to 100% renewable energy by the end of 2024.
With a 40-year legacy, Borsan, a brand recognized among Türkiye's top 500 industrial enterprises and included in the TURQUALITY® Program, conducts value-added exports across more than 80 countries worldwide. Borsan emphasizes sustainability as a central aspect of its business strategies.
Borsan CEO Arbek Akay stated that the company has invested 300 million TL in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects under its sustainability strategies. “As we advance quickly but steadily toward becoming a global brand, we prioritize creating value for our customers and society while focusing on the optimal use of existing resources to contribute to a livable future and higher quality of life. At the core of our sustainability strategies lies the goal to amplify the positive impacts of our activities on the environment, economy, and society. Beyond addressing energy costs directly, we prioritize 100% renewable energy and energy efficiency to achieve a zero-carbon footprint,” Akay explained.
300 Million TL Investment in Green Energy
Akay detailed the company's energy efficiency efforts, which began in 2021, and the establishment of an Energy Committee in 2022. “Driven by our commitment to sustainability, we exceed legal requirements with ambitious goals in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We have implemented our Energy Management System and received the 50001 Energy Management System certification. Under the European Green Energy Agreement, we prioritize renewable energy use. In 2023, we completed and operationalized a 3.2-megawatt rooftop solar power plant (GES). Additionally, a 10-megawatt solar field in Çorum will begin operations within days. By the end of 2024, we aim to meet 100% of our electricity consumption with renewable energy, achieving an installed capacity of 13.2 megawatts,” he noted.
Highlighting the company’s investments, Akay added, “Our GES investments amount to approximately 300 million TL. In 2023, our energy efficiency improvement projects saved 815,000 kWh of electricity and 150,000 kWh of natural gas, totaling nearly 1 million kWh in energy savings. These initiatives resulted in a 3% reduction in energy consumption compared to the previous year. Our efforts to efficiently use energy include modernizing machinery, acquiring energy-efficient equipment, and replacing existing systems with higher efficiency alternatives. Additionally, energy efficiency plays a critical role in our process and product designs. Over the last two years, our total investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency have reached 300 million TL.”
Zero Waste and Circular Economy Initiatives
In addition to 100% renewable energy use and energy efficiency, Borsan prioritizes recycling and the circular economy. Akay noted that the company is certified under the Zero Waste program and has ambitious goals to achieve a zero-carbon footprint.
Integrated Approach to Sustainability Management
“Our journey to becoming a global brand is marked by carefully planned and swift steps,” Akay emphasized. “For 40 years, Borsan has prioritized creating value for people, the environment, and the economy—this is part of our corporate DNA. Today, sustainability, encompassing people, the environment, and the economy, is an integral part of global value and trade chains. We manage our business and sustainability strategies in an integrated manner, striving to create positive impacts across environmental, ethical, social, and economic domains while generating added value for all stakeholders.
“All our plans and investments are based on sustainable economic business models. In line with the European Green Agreement and associated regulations, we label the energy classes of all our products and transparently share energy efficiency test results with end users to raise awareness. Through our educational initiatives and models, we aim to cultivate free-thinking young minds to create a better future. We also focus on R&D efforts for sustainable raw material usage and conduct numerous projects that directly and indirectly contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.
“With our core values of Human, Trust, and Passion, our commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability underpins our pledge to the present and the future,” Akay concluded.
